Luke BUNTER
« on: Wednesday 26 June 19 12:26 BST (UK) »
Luke BUNTER m Jane WILLS on 20 Feb 1722 in Mylor

1. Where, and to whom, was he born? I can find no trace of him.

2. Probate was granted in 1748 in Exeter on the will of a Luke BUNTER, almost certainly the same man, but I cannot find his burial. The will might have been destroyed in WWII but, if not, where can I locate it?

If anyone can help with the above, I should be most grateful.

the index shows his residence as St Gluvias. Burials for that period & that parish have been transcribed for the opc database, so not buried there. Is it possible that he was a mariner and died at sea?

The will is not on the Cornwall record office catalogue, so not held there like most wills from Cornwall at that time. Looks to be one of the wills that was lost in WWII. Just noticed, it's an administration so he died without making a will and his widow or children needed to get control of his assets.

You could contact Devon Record office to confirm

Cornwall Record Office is closed until it reopens on new site, this September hopefully

As it's an administration not a will, there is this burial 28 June 1735 in Mylor for Luke Bunter of Gluvias

http://www.rootschat.com/links/01nz3/

It could be that his family hadn't needed to sort out his assets until 1748.There may have been some change in circumstances -son Luke married in 1749. Without seeing the document, there's no way to be sure. That length of gap can occur, I have a relative applying for administration of the effects of his father over 14 years after the father's death.

Thanks.

I didn't find the Mylor burial of 1735, because I was not looking that early. However, this could be of his first son, who was bap in St Gluvias on 30 Jan 1723.

Your suggestion that Luke (senior) was lost at sea would explain the absence of a local burial record. The reference to a will is obviously mistaken, so it doesn't look as if I shall learn anything more about him from that source.

I'm still intrigued by the fact that I have so far been unable to find his baptism

Stupid, or what? I've just realized that, earlier this evening I had found Luke (junior) in the 1851, living with his mother and described as 'Greenwich Out Pensioner', so it could well be that the 1735 burial was, indeed, of his father as you suggested. (I'm going back to bed, now!)

This is getting ridiculous! I'm getting my centuries and characters thoroughly muddled. Forget my previous post. I'll have another look tomorrow.

Thanks for all those details - most helpful.

Possibly the most significant is the appearance of the name Dorcas. It's the first time it's occurred in my tree and surely is of great importance for this couple to have used it for their first daughter. If I'm lucky, it comes from the BUNTER side rather than the TRENEER side.

Thanks again.
