Marriage by Publication

My 5 x Great Grandparents were married in 1740.  The parish register states 'Marriage by Publication'.  I'm not sure exactly what that means.

I think it means Marriage by Publication of Banns?

Thank you both very much  It sort of seems obvious now but I've only seen 'Marriage by Banns' or 'Marriage by Licence'
