The Gordon Highlanders 1904 -1911

On a thread in the WW1 forum I have already discussed my grandfathers service record. He was William Evans born 1885 in Liverpool  and died 1931 in Liverpool. His service number was 9273. My question here concerns his record before 1914. It appears that he first enlisted 1/1/1904. In 1911 he had left the army and was a ships steward.

The Boer war for instance, had ended so where was he in the 1904 -1911 period?

Do you have the right William Evans? William Evans 9273 Gordon Highlanders was discharged from the army after the war, in April 1919.

Yes it appears that he went back in the army due to a change in the law and served until 1919.

Enlistment in 1904 and civilian life in 1911 looks very much like a man on a 7 years with the colours followed by 5 on reserve engagement, being called back to the service in 1914 (he entered France on 31 Aug 1914 with 1st Battalion).  The battalion was in Maryhill Barracks Glasgow by 1902 after the Boer War, later Aberdeen and Aldershot and as far as I can tell were in UK until the start of the Great war when they were in Plymouth. What were they doing?  Training like most UK based regiments in peacetime.
