Look Up Request for St Augustine the less Bristol marriage in 1834
« on: Sunday 30 June 19 00:37 BST (UK) »
Hi There

Can anybody look up the details of the marriage between Charles Bullen Davis and Darthula Eliza Rowe on the 28th August 1834. I am interested in the names of the two witnesses?

Darthula's parents are rather elusive both she and they are from Newfoundland. I have a hint of an Aunt in Bristol which might tie up with one of the witnesses recorded at marriage record.

Many thanks in advance
Billy

Tried searching for Darthula, but the best way to search is for Charles BULLEN - as her same is spelt incorrectly.

British Newspapers on Line - don't subscribe (you can have a free trial) - but can make out

Salisbury and Winchester Journal

Published: Monday 22 September 1834

The heading is

Birth. - Sept 16, the Vicarage, Bradford Abbas, Dorset, the lady the Rev. Kfirant, of daughter, Married on.

..... eldest-daughter Mr Wm. Allard, the former place.  Married, St Augustine's Church, Bristol, by the Rev. Wm Millner, Charles BULLEN, youngest son of James DAVIS, of Weymouth, to Darthuia filza, youngest daughter of 9f the latejEltas ROWE, Esq of St. 'John's.....

(the transcript spelling is all a bit jumbled up).

---

The census says Darthula was born in St Johns, Newfoundland, Canada - so her father was Elias ROWE - deceased, and she was the youngest daughter.

I Googled

Elias Rowe St John Newfoundland Canada

There is a PDF file headed

Origins of English Settlement in Newfoundland
by W G Handcock - and as there is an Elias ROWE, John JOB of Combeinteighhead/West Teignmouth - searched for ROWE - and there is quite a bit of info

https://www.drcranton.com/crantonorigin/media/tmp/newfoundland_book.pdf

on Page 172 - it says...  In 1810, their brig Anna, originally registered in Exeter in 1800, was also transferred to a Liverpool registry.

Among other Teign valley men, such as William UNDERHAY, Abraham HINGSTONE, Stephn HARVEY, Robert BODEN, John CODNER and Elias ROWE etc ......

-

This article is worth having a look at.

Hi There

Many thanks for the information - I already have most of it recorded during my research and recorded in family search.

The Elias Rowe in the book is too old to be Darthula's father, he was born in 1735 and died in 1810. His wife Eliza was born in 1738 and died in 1815. I suspect they may be Darthula's grandparents.

The entry in the newspaper also states Darthula had been staying at the home of her late Aunt - Mrs. Danson. About 10 years ago I saw the entry in the parish register for marriage one was a female who was living in Bristol somewhere - unfortunately, I cannot find that image in my records, I suspect it was only saved on a laptop that failed a number of years ago.

And hence my lookup -request

Many thanks again
Billy

Searching for

England & Wales, Prerogative Court of Canterbury Wills - 1384-1858 (as 'richer' people's Wills can often be found here regardless of County)

Searching for DANSON - there is a William DANSON's (of BRISTOL) Probate Date 7 September 1825 - (Death record states he was 70) -

He mentions is wife Elizabeth - and a Son, named Edmund ROWE DANSON  Frederick DANSON

Hugh William DANSON - Thomas ELIAS DANSON

Needs careful reading pages of it.

Thank you so much for the information on the Danson's - I only started researching them yesterday.

I am not a member of Ancestry - is there any further information about Elizabeth Danson (1761-1832)?
