Some of the letter forms are reminiscent of the Cyrillic alphabet, as used in Russian, Bulgarian and other similar languages. However, I'm struggling to make any words/names out of it.

What is the subject of the print, and can you tell us anything about its provenance?

Is '1989s' a typo, and did you mean 1980s?

No help but...

Where was the print bought which may be a clue to location he lived?

Fish/Bird (Seagull)? in pic...may relate to his job e.g. Fishing/Navy/Sailor?

How sure are you it's 1980s & not 1880s as it looks older than 1980s?

Just thoughts  :-\

It says '89' after what I think will be the artists name on the right hand side - prints like this usually have the 'title' on the left, and the artist's name on the right, but I don't expect it's set in stone.
I would have thought this was 1989.
Possibly not old enough for 1889.
The etching plate (I presume) has rounded corners - does that help date it?
The 'name' looks like a capital letter, then a long name. At first I thought it was a capital "S", but if you look at it very closely, it's not an 'S' - perhaps a 'b' (not a capital).

Best I can do with the 'surname' is Caryanne, or maybe 'baryanne' - without a capital letter, but it's a bit of a leap of faith!

It looks almost as if the original first letter (the one by itself) has been written over - perhaps they wrote a 'b', and then an 'S' over the top of it?

Definitely Cyrillic, looks to me like Б. Богданов/B. Bogdanov but the d is a bit sloppy if it's a d.

The title is Несебър/Nessebar which is a coastal town in Bulgaria.

I agree with rlw254's reading.  With only a signature and a place name, you couldn't say for sure what the language is.

Possibly this artist - Bogdan Bogdanov, who lives in Nessebar (but doesn't say whether he's Russian or Bulgarian) - https://www.artfinder.com/artist/bogdanbogdanov/about/#/

Actually in this case, with the help of rlw254's invaluable transcription, it can be identified as Bulgarian.

The penultimate letter in the title/place name occurs in Bulgarian but not in modern Russian. Russian had it too until spelling was reformed in 1918, but that won't apply here.

Carol - good find about the artist. It doesn't look like any of the work on his website, but could his style have evolved from that over 30 years?
