Wickham Market population in 1841
« on: Wednesday 03 July 19 16:26 BST (UK) »
I would like to compare the population of Wickham Market with Harrow, Middx. in any one year about 1831- 1841. Can anyone recommend a simple way. Thanks, toby.

There used to be a great website called histpop.org which had exactly that information and was freely available.  Sadly it appears to have 'died' since I last looked.

Let's hope someone else can find an equivalent :(

Pleased that you got what you needed Toby :)  (Btw I used to live in Wickham Market!)

Stan, I tried 20 times and had the 'busy' message 17 times.  The search facility came up three times but failed to produce results except once - and that one result wasn't relevant ::)

I probably need more practice with Histpop searches.

I have been to W.M. once and found the tombstone I wanted. Amazing how in late 1830s someone from W.M. came to marry someone from west Dorset. T

Yes & no. She, a 'Beart', had been given an education by her mother and somehow went to work in a school in Harrow. Not HARROW but an ordinary school. A trustee of that school was a minister in a little village in Dorset and must , for some reason , have introduced her to a 'Foss' from that village.  They married and she went on to teach in Marylebone before teaching in Somerset and finally had her own school near Portesham.
All this came from a loving education. T
