Doris didn't marry either - died 23 December 1928 living at 76 Lyford Road, Wandsworth, but died at South London Hospital for Women, Clapham.  Probate to Edith £544 £18s 1d

On George's marriage cert to Grace Jane, his occupation is recorded as Civil Service. You posted that he is a clerk on the 1881 and 1891 a writer.

It's most likely that he was a writer in the sense of being a clerk as opposed to being a writer of literary works.
