Private Edward Gordon - Seaforth Highlanders
« on: Friday 12 July 19 06:07 BST (UK) »
Looking for some help, a relative found some medals.

Born Dyke, Elgin, Morayshire, In 1911 he was listed as staying at Maidenhouse Longmorn (near Elgin). He was 14 years old and listed as staying with Father William (age 44), his Wife Annie (nee Mackenzie).

Killed in Action 25th March 1917, Age 21. Buried at Sunken Road Cemetery, Fampoux, Pas de Calais France.

The CWGC Gravestone lists – Son of William Gordon , 7 Osborne Place, Aberdeen. He is listed in 1920 as a restaurateur.  His wife (Edward’s Mother – Annie died age 57 on 6th December 1917 at 23 Greyfriars Street Elgin of heart related issues.
William died on 7th October 1941 at ARI with spinal injuries, he was listed as a poultry farmer age 73. The death was entered by Jane Gordon , Dunrovin, Parkhill , Dyce.

The P&J on 9th October 1941,  That the death was the result of an Accident, and that he stayed at Dunrovin with his wife Jeannie Johnston. He married Jeanie Lumsden Johnston in 1919 in Rubislaw Parish or Aberdeen.

This is where the trail dries up.

(1) What happened to Jeanie Johnston?
(2) Who was Jane Gordon? Sister? daughter?
(3) Did Jane Gordon get married, if so to whom and did they have any family, if so Whom?

Any help would be great.

' He married Jeanie Lumsden Johnston in 1919 in Rubislaw Parish or Aberdeen.'

What information does the marriage certificate give for information on her to work out her age and any further details?

Any will of William specifying more about Jane?

Is it possible that Jane IS Jeanie?  I've often seen Jane/ Jean/ Janet used alternatively in Scottish records, although Jeanie might not be mixed in with those.

According to the 1901 (if I am looking at the right one!), Edward was a nephew, surname MacKenzie, born Dyke, Moray.  If that is correct, it would appear they raised him as a son, along with their daughter Elizabeth Gordon.

The only birth I could see on Scotlandspeople that fit was:
MACKENZIE  EDWARD BROWN M  1897 133/4 Dyke

Hi all

Good thought!   The Death cert was signed Jane Gordon, never thought about it could possibly be Jeanie (married in Rubislaw in 1919).

Trying to track down what happened to Jane / Jeanie from 1941 when William died....

A 1911 Census shows him with William and Annie Gordon age 14, at that time no other people listed at the property.

He died 6 years later in France.

It was suggested through other chat areas he may have been adopted, but was unable to find an proof, so the birth name may be possible

Death - Jane Lumsden Gordon(other surname Johnston) , age 91 , 1974 , Aberdeen Aberdeen(shire) , mother's maiden surname MacDonald(Scotlandspeople).

Does that match up with the information on the 1919 marriage certificate ?

It is highly likely indeed that Jane is Jeanie, especially with the evidence of her middle name.

Jane/Jean/Jeanie are one of the commonest set of alternatives.

Janet is also sometimes used as an alternative to Jane/Jean/Jeanie, but sometimes you find a family with both a Jane/Jean/Jeanie and a Janet, which suggests that Janet (even though it is a derivative of Jane/Jean) was regarded in some places as a separate name.

Does the 1941 death certificate not say what Jane Gordon's relationship to William was?

You won't find 'proof' of an adoption because formal legal adoption did not exist until about 1930.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

William's death cert shows he was married to (1) Annie McKenzie , (2) Jeannie Lumsden Johnston

Death cert shows "Jane Gordon" Widow

Probably same person hence confusion of (Jeannie / Jeanie / Jane)  2 of the 3 variants on the death cert.

Now looking to see if William and Jeanie /Jane had any children.

Doh!! just twigged....My brain is slow today!

bbart  Edward's mother had the surname McKenzie before she married William Gordon.

So probably likely born Edward McKenzie, and changed to Gordon when she married William Gordon.....
