Conscientious Objectors
« on: Saturday 13 July 19 11:09 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I know my grandfather's ancestors were Quakers. How do I find out if he were a conscientious objector in WW1? His name is William Henry Askew. He was born in Liverpool in 1890.

I think the first step could be to see if you can find an army record:
Medal Index Cards
Service Records
Absent Voters lists.

Step 2:
Was he in a reserved occupation? (is he on the 1911 census and what was his job?)

Step 3
Was he a CO? - newspaper reports or tribunal records (this is beyond the scope of my knowledge of where to look!)
