Alexander Sistrom - Sjostrom circa 1786 to 1855
« on: Thursday 18 July 19 08:36 BST (UK) »
Hello
I am trying to find the surname of his wife Ann.
He was my 3rd great-grandfather
He was born in Gottenburg, Sweden circa 1786. He was a Mariner, and i am not sure if he married in Middlesex (London) or Whitby Yorkshire!

There were three children to the marriage
------ Ann Sistrom circa 1817 (married Charles Brown 1840) she was my 2nd great-grandmother ------
1851 census shows she born in Shoreditch, Middlesex.
1861, 1871  Census shows she was born in Shadwell, Middlesex.
1881 Census shows she was born in Middlesex London.
------ Robert Sistrom (Sistron)born 1819 Whitby Yorkshire ------
------ Jacob Sistrom born 1824 Tower Hamlets Area Middlesex ------
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi
This looks to be him in Middlesex in 1851 census:

Ancestry has a few marriage hits for him in Middlesex but I do not have a subscription to see them. They may well be for his children.

Hello jamcat95,
The 1851 was a good find but shows birth as Sunderland in 1760, and a Shopkeeper.
For sure he was born in Sweden (likely Gothenburg) and that he was a Mariner.
As far as I can tell there are 3 references for him on Ancestry, and they are for his three marriages.
Thanks for your replies.

Hi
Yes I did see Sunderland and shopkeeper but one can never be too sure.
Anyway do you have these 3 marriage records, do they show his father's name etc?

Hi Ian
Yes his Daughter Ann married 22 Nov 1840, sons Robert married 1 Jan 1843 and Jacob married 8 June 1846
Father in all three was Alexander Sistrom Mariner. There are several spellings of Sistrom
Sistrum-Sestrum-Siostrom or Sjostrom.
The Sistrom's found seem to be in America and UK. They appear to be descendants of Alexander and Ann, believed to have resided at Whitby Yorkshire in 1814. The name has been changed from the Scandinavian Siostrom or Sjostrom.

Do you know where Ann was born? That might be a clue to where they married. I had quick look through the London marriages, but couldn't see any likely candidates.
I am Australian, from all the lands I come (my ancestors, at least!)

Pine/Pyne, Dowdeswell, Kempster, Sando/Sandoe/Sandow, Nancarrow, Hounslow, Youatt, Richardson, Jarmyn, Oxlade, Coad, Kelsey, Crampton, Lindner, Pittaway, and too many others to name.
Devon, Dorset, Gloucs, Cornwall, Warwickshire, Bucks, Oxfordshire, Wilts, Germany, Sweden, and of course London, to name a few.

Hello pinefamily,
Both the 1861 and 1871 indicate he was born in Whitby Yorkshire
Until I can find marriage document I am not sure. It is possible that she may have been Ann Blackburn born 9 Sept 1785 in Whitby Yorkshire. Her father was Jacob Blackburn who was a Master Mariner.

That fits with the couple's son baptised Jacob.
Perhaps concentrate your search in Whitby.
