John Matthews
« on: Friday 19 July 19 19:10 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I am trying to find out whether a John Matthews b1817 Devon, was a widower when he married Hannah Cook in 1846 in Thatcham.
My relative was an Elizabeth Andrews b1821 who possibly married a John Mathews in Plymouth in 1838. I cannot find them together on a Census. She may have died and he remarried, just a long shot.
He was a Miller by profession and the only subsequent Miller by profession I can find, is on the 1851 Census married to Hannah unknown living in Berkshire.
Any help would be great.
Thanks

Shouldn't the first step be to confirm that the marriage is correct for "Your" Eliza?

Hi,
There are 3 trees on Anc..y that have much the same info as yours, but no mention of John having previously being married an Elizabeth.

In 1881 they are in Padworth, Berks as;
John Matthews,aged 64,  Miller b. Devon Broadclist??
Hannah, aged 56, Post Mistress
Henry, 19, Postman, b.Eaton
Elizabeth, 10??, b.Eaton
RG11/1298

In 1861 they are in Eaton; much the same as above but ages;
John; 46,
Hannah, 36,
Emma, 13
John,11,
Hannah,6
RG9/852
