1841 Census Chatham Barracks? PURCELL Completed - thanks
« on: Wednesday 17 August 05 10:50 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help please?

I have recently come across a birth for an Isaac J Purcell dated 1841 Chatham in the Army records. It does not give parents names only the regiment - the 97th. I would love to know whether his parents could possibly be Edward Purcell & his wife Ann. Ann was born in Burbage, Leicestershire.

Two other Purcells were also listed in the same records for the 97th, Thomas Purcell 1833 Colombo & Eliza Purcell (my gt gt grandmother)1834 Colombo.

Thomas was Eliza's brother. Another brother Samuel Purcell was born in Corfu about 1843. Samuel & Eliza are the only known surviving children.

Edward died before 1851, possibly abroad & other than his regiment & the fact that he was a Sergeant Major/Colour Sergeant I know nothing about him. Edward & Ann must have had more children between 1834 & 1843 surely. I feel Isaac may possibly be one on them.

The 1841 census information may just give me the clues I am looking for so any help would be very much appreciated.

Regards

Hi Criggy

Just a thought, have you tried the Chatham baptism registers to try and save purchasing a birth certificate?

Hi Casaguida

Thanks for your input.

No, I haven't tried the Chatham baptisms yet. It is a thought, though, thanks.

Eliza Purcell was baptized within the regiment itself, although perhaps this was because they were stationed abroad at the time.

I have a gut feeling that Ann ran off to marry Edward. She was born & bred in Burbage & returned there after Edward's death but she doesn't appear to have been married there. He may also have been Catholic as Eliza was baptized by a "padre" but perhaps there was only one priest in the regiment & he had the power to baptise everyone. I haven't been able to find out about this yet.

Thanks for your help.
