Trying to find which beach our father landed on ON D Day pls
« on: Wednesday 24 July 19 16:19 BST (UK) »
Hi my sister and I are trying to find which beach our father landed on in Normandy on D-Day.
We know he was with the Canadians and was a CFN in the R.E.M.E.
We have found a number 14426142
Would anyone be able to help with this information please.
Many thanks

So he was a British REME soldier supporting the Canadians on D-Day?  If he was with the Canadians on D-Day he would almost certainly have landed on Juno beach.

Do you have his army papers from MoD?

This confirms that there were a couple of REME units involved in the assault on Juno Beach, 114th LAA Regiment Workshop, and 86th HAA Regiment Workshop: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juno_Beach_order_of_battle

Your father's army file should tell you what unit he was serving in in June 1944.

Thank you so much for such a quick reply Shaun J.  My sister who lives in France has sent me further photos;
We have our father's Soldier's Service and Pay Book.  That's where we found his number, rank and branch.
On the "Particulars of Training" page our father has written the following for June 44:
Embarked UK for overseas         1-6-44
PT II  22  dtd 25 June 44
22.B.R.S  R.E.M.E.
We also have some letters his Employer "International Harvester" wrote to him while in service.  In January 1944 they sent the letter to our father to :
'D' Company Squad 25, 14th T.T.C.  R.E.M.E., Ladysmith Barracks, Ashton-U-Lyne, Nr Manchester.
We unfortunately don't have any further papers from the MoD.
I don't know if this explains anymore?
Many thanks again.

My father's Pioneer Company landed on Juno Beach in support of the Canadians. In fact, he never made it off the beach but survived. His army record provided useful information plus a visit to Kew for the unit's war diary.
Thomas, Davies, Jones, Walters, Daniel in Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion. That should narrow it down a bit!
Vincent: Fressingfield, Suffolk, Stockton & Sunderland.
Murtha/Murtaugh: Dundalk & Sunderland
Ingram: Cairnie by Huntly, Scotland then Abergavenny, Monmouthshire.
Bardouleau: London - in memory of my stepmother Annie Rose née Bardouleau who put up with a lot from me.

Thank you ever so much Shaun and Diplodicus for all your help.
My sister has also found another form which is the Request for diversion of Mail dated 2 May 1945 and  under
1. Full designation of Unit is has:  876 L of C HY., Rec Sec R E M E
and
2. Present Formational Command (not sure of this last word not clear) 5   L of C  Sub Area
and
4. Future Formational Command (as above!)  21  L of C Sub Area
and
5. Future Geographical Location and Map Ref : Obam Garage, Aalester Straat, Eindhoven E4316
and
7. Officer's authorising :  I think I can make out  J Ward Capt

Would this happen to help us finding the exact beach?  Also does it mean our father ended up in Eindhoven? or is that just for the post sent to the forces.

Again many many thanks :) :)

I live in Eindhoven and I know the Obam(Ford) garage at the Aalsterweg very well. The garage is gone to make place for another office building.

Cheers,
