Looking for any information about my great-grandfather!
« on: Friday 26 July 19 18:35 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I am looking for any information regarding my great-grandfather David Lewis Evans whom I have found on the 1919 Absent Voters List in Great Stanney, Cheshire.

According to this list he was a Private in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, service no. 78001, however I cannot find any service information for him.

I know that he was born around 1891 according to his marriage cert. and age at death (1945) but I do not know where. He was married in 1912 in Chester, living on Westminster road and working at the leadworks.

If anyone could help me find any further information about his time in the army I would be very grateful.

Thanks

The only record that appears to have survived is a record of him being granted leave from Prees Heath camp from No 1 Dispersal Unit there from 31 Oct 1919 to 3 Nov 1919. The unit suggests he is waiting for release from the service

There is no medal card which is usually indicative of no overseas service.  No service record usually means it was lost in WW2 to bombing and fire as were 60% of records.

I am Zoe Northeast, granddaughter of Maximilian Double.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

Does the marriage certificate show his father's name and occupation?

On the original 1911 census document he is down as single not a widower. The widower is a 64 yr old male 3rd name above David Evans.

Philip - Yes his father was also a David Evans, named as deceased at the time of the wedding, occupation a lifeboat man.

Yes I had seen this 1911 census entry and it seemed the most likely match. My only issue is with the Lowestoft birthplace, as I cannot match him to any birth reg in that area!

Keyboard - He died in Hull in 1945. Yes he married Rose Hilda Smith in 1912, whose mother was Georgina Smith. It seems that the whole family moved to Hull during WW2 from Ellesmere Port. Rose then remarried in Hull in 1959, I haven't confirmed her death yet but there is only one entry that fits her age and name and it is 1967 back in Wirral.
