Monaghan workhouse
« on: Friday 26 July 19 21:41 BST (UK) »
Hi! Sadly Clones library has no Monaghan Workhouse records. My wife's great grandfather was a teacher there in the early 1870s...I was wondering if anyone else had info on the workhouse or on how teachers were trained in Ireland at that time. Many thanks

Hi!
Thanks for prompt response - I have been on that website and got quite excited when they said the reports and minutes were available to access at Clones Library...but when I contacted them they said they were sorry but had no records from Monagahn Workhouse at all - perhaps they were destroyed in the 1922 fire at the Dublin record Office..however, thanks again for pointing me towards that website - appreciated!
Rob

If the Workhouse site said that Clones Library had the records then 1) they weren't destroyed in the 1920s and 2) perhaps Clones did have them they time that information was compiled but they have been moved into storage or to another site.
Have you tried searching the National Archives catalogue?

Added- from their Clones Library research guide-
There were four workhouses in Co. Monaghan. They were in Carrickmacross, Castleblayney, Clones & Monaghan. Records (with some years missing) for Carrickmacross and Castleblayney are held in the Monaghan County Library, Clones.
However, under 'other sources-
Admittance Register for Monaghan Infirmary 1846-1849
Indoor Relief Register for Monaghan 1909-1910
Co. Monaghan Infirmary Admittance Register 1858-1868

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi!
His name was Thomas Scott Martin. He married Letitia Riddle who was also presumably a teacher at the workhouse as they had three children there. They then moved to Belfast where he established what became quite a successful estate agency..they also had three more children.
