A little bell rang. Banbridge was a linen town. Robinson and Cleaver built their famous Belfast store in early 1870s and I have a distinct impression from my childhood that there was a faded mural on a building with the company name. Maybe a red herring but......

The surnames of Robinson and Moore, I would not have regarded as particularly Irish -- and there is no evidence that this particular copy of the book originated in Ireland.

Both surnames Moore and Robinson/Robertson are very, very common Ulster surnames also found in Scotland.

I knew Robertson was common in Scotland -- but I never dreamed that Robinson was anything but English! We have so many Robinsons where I live in England. Moore also - I must confess to thinking it was English. I'll slope off now into my corner.

In Ulster Robertson and Robinson are interchangeable and Moore is pronounced like 'muir' rather than 'more.' We like to confuse people here  ;D

Aaah! I see the Moore/Muir connection. Thank you for that -- another snippet of knowledge to store away!

I have found a possible candidate.

Belfast New Letter 3 August 1876

"ROBINSON-ABBOT - May 31, at Christ Church, North Adelaide, South Australia, by the right Rev the Lord Bishop of Adelaide, assisted by the Ven Archdeacon Marryat, William George Robinson Esq, B.A.,T.C.D. eldest son of the Rev William Robinson, Incumbent of Kilwarlin, Hillsborough Co Down, to Mary (Minnie) only daughter of the late Thomas Abbot Esq C.S.E. Dublin"

The William George Robinson in Dublin who married Mary Ann Gunning in Sept 1864 appears to have died in Dublin in 1877. I await the death certificate to confirm.

Rev William Robinson is buried in St John's Kilwarlin. He was Rector there 1876 - 1892

Good find Matt -- definitely a candidate -- so possibly research Rev Robinson's wife to check her maiden name -- hoping it is Moore --- OR am I right in thinking that Australian death certificates provide this information along with the names of children of the deceased?

I do recall seeing one and can certainly remember children being listed -- but whether the wife's maiden name is shown, I can't remember. Also not certain if they have always been that detailed.

See -- you seem to have hopefully answered your own query!!

And finally the answer (from Family Search site). Ireland Marriage Indexes

(Rev)William Robinson married Melinda MOORE in Clones, 27 April 1852. Groom's father Samuel Robinson, so the dedication in my book is almost certainly to a sister of Melinda

Oh Matt -- well done! Thank you so much for the update.

How satisfying for you to have solved the mystery and to now know who those people were. I am so pleased for you.

Amazing really -- it was simply 2 names on a fly leaf of a book.
