Accidental shooting - Boston
« on: Tuesday 30 July 19 15:17 BST (UK) »
I am doing some research for a friend who is trying to find out about her father and grandfather both called Alfred Hardy.
Alfred senior was born in Benington 1871 and was apparently accidently shot dead on his farm by his son Alfred in 1935 in Boston. his widow Grace is shown on 1938 register as living at Boston.
I wondered whether I can find any newspaper reports of the incident. I subscribe to Ancestry but cannot find anything there.
Any suggestions would be most welcome

All I can find,

Boston Guardian 26 October 1935 report of funeral and  list of mourners

Boston Guardian 2 November 1835 account of Memorial Service.

Also the usual advertisement for  creditors.

No mention of any shooting.

I would apply for his death certificate which will give cause of death and further details if anything untoward.

Boston Guardian 31 Aug 1929

Skirbeck Farmer Shot in Leg

Thursday last Mr Alfred Hardy , a farmer living at Rose Villa , Washdyke Road , was out rabbit shooting with his son , Alfred Hardy jnr.

The young man was in the act of withdrawing the charge from the gun , when for some inexplicable reason it fired. He was standing about 4 yds from his father who was shot in the back of the left leg above the ankle bone. Mr Hardy was taken to Boston Hospital where his left foot was amputated , about 4  inches below the knee.

The above is a summary of the article. There is no mention of a death , but it seems unlikely that there would be 2 shooting accidents involving father and son both called Alfred Hardy.

Seeing the other comments perhaps death followed a few years later , maybe not directly caused by the accident.

The probate index for Alfred Hardy , died 18 Oct 1935 , gives an address in Washdyke Lane , which is mentioned as his address in the 1929 article.

Edit : if you recheck the 1939 Register for that address it also confirms the details.

Thank you all so much, you are right Christina, my friend thought the shooting occurred sometime before his death, it affected her father all his life that he was responsible for his father's death.

How can I access the site where you found this information please?

It would have helped if the shooting  had not been stated as occurring in 1935.

As this occurred around 10 years before the use of antibiotics I think it likely that the cause of death may well be given as sepsiscor similar.
