Where were the East Surrey Rgt 1883
« on: Wednesday 31 July 19 09:55 BST (UK) »
I am researching a soldier who served in the East Surrey Rgt. On his soldiers papers under medical history is a list of stations he served on. I have deciphered most but there are three that have stumped me. They are on the attached image.
I have
Landed in India 23.10.83
Duration ?   1.11.83
Moradurkun ? 14.3.84
HMS Himalaya
Abbassiajeb ? (Egypt) 26.9.84
Can anyone please correct the ones marked with ?
Thank You

He was in 2nd Battalion.
Dinapore
Moradabad
Abassia the nearest found - a district of Cairo and the 2nd Battalion arrived there (Cairo) on the date in the record.  Cairo is given in a number of newspaper reports as the base in 1884.

Findmypast has newspaper reports.  Entering either "Stations of the Army" at the appropriate date will  throw up the monthly published list of where regiments were.  More detail though if you enter the battalion and regiment ie 2nd Battalion East Surrey (East Surreys had 2 Battalions after 1881, "stations" continues to give them their earlier numbers, 31st and 70th, for a time after 1881.  Staions also gives the depot location.
