Gravestone photographic resource - temporarily not online
« on: Friday 02 August 19 16:55 BST (UK) »
I went to  re-visit this super site, which is normally at www.gravestonephotos.com,  today and was desolate to find that its gone walkabout.
I have had photos from this site before and still had an email address so mailed to enquire. Despite his current problems the owner took the time to reply, which was very kind of him.

Phew! its not been discontinued, apparently a server upgrade has gone wrong.
Which is a shame but at least it means that once they sort the problems it will be back :-)

Just thought I'd pass the info along.

Hopefully they will allow slightly larger images now, some of the images for larger stones and monuments are almost impossible to read.

Melba -- are you talking about the ones on the site itself --- or the ones you request an image of?

I have always found the ones where I request an image are legible. This additional service is also free - the 'owner' simply requires a letter of thanks.

Funnily enough I also tried to access the site today -- my browser, for the first time ever, told me it was an unsafe site - which concerned me and I didn't proceed. That has never happened before.

I do agree it is a wonderful free resource when you find a gravestone for an ancestor.
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

Pennines, it is ones I have requested that aren't really legible, that are large monuments. They supply very outdated resolution, something like 1 megapixel, which doesn't really compete well with the likes of findagrave.com.

I assume that the 'thumbnail' images on the site are sized like that to save on server space (which comes at a cost).
As Pennines says though, when I have found one of interest and request a photo the image is good - and I usually donate a couple of pounds as the site is brilliant and I don't expect the site owner to carry all the associated costs out of the goodness of his heart.

No, it was the ones supplied by email, I just checked and it was only 0.25 megapixels.

Melba -- that is such a shame. I haven't had a problem with the ones I have requested -- although it has only been about 5 or so.   I - and presumably Boo - have been lucky.

I still feel it's a tremendous resource and you have made me feel guilty Boo - I should have thought of making a donation and didn't. I will put that right -- thank you for mentioning it.

oh it wasn't my intention to make anyone feel guilty (though I am sure a donation would be gratefully received).

As for quality of the pictures. I assume some of the photos may have been taken many years ago, its all done by volunteers and maybe when the photos were taken cameras weren't as sooperdooper as is common now? So quality possibly does vary.

The photo properties shows the camera it was taken with which was capable of 10 megapixels. So I think a decision has been made to make the images very small for storage, but unfortunately at 1/4 of a megapixel it is too small for many bigger stones with small text and large monuments. I would probably choose to use findagrave if I was uploading beause they don't seem to have a resolution restriction.
