Sorry but this made me laugh! Hence we are unlikely to find her showing that occupation on a census!

There is an Ellen Williams b Pendleton here in 1861

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M7D5-HL7

May be nothing to do with Maurice though

Strange that 2 year old George Shawcross is listed above 5 year old Maurice on that 1871 census.

However I cannot find a birth for Maurice in Lancashire at approximately the right time under either Williams or Shawcross.

Maurice's wife Bessie may still be alive in 1939 shown as Widow --living in Sheffield -- she dies I think in 1952 still in Sheffield. (Not that this helps with Maurice -- I was just hoping he was alive in 1939 and we had an actual birth date for him.)

I am back to Maurice and Bessie's marriage certificate --- I can be a real nag sometimes!

Maybe ignore that one and consider this (still may be nothing to do with MW)

1851 2223/29

Ellen Williams 5 yrs b Pendleton with parents Maurice and Mary Ann and siblings.

1861 2915/13/20
Ellen 15 yrs
Parent Morris is a Shoemaker and sister is a Bootbinder.

Heywood that's a really promising find! Even if it isn't Maurice it's a huge coincidence.

Just checked for a marriage for an Ellen Williams to a Shawcross between 1861 and 1871-- but couldn't see one anywhere -- yet the Ellen Shawcross is saying she is married. Big mystery still.

Yes I agree -so much to connect but not enough ::)

In 1871 Maurice was lodging in Posey Lane Salford which was close to Garden Lane. I wonder if that is the same as Garden Street of the school enrolment.

Pennines,
Just realised though that these findings would not fit with the Workhouse entries you found re the possible brothers in 1881 census.  :-\

Yes I know -- but this has now become so much more complicated somehow simply because we have no actual facts about Maurice as a child - not even a registered birth.

Hence he could be ANY of the Maurice Williams who have been traced. (To be honest you wouldn't have thought that the given name of Maurice would pose many problems would you).

Anyway I have just checked Salford in 1871 and there was both a Garden Lane and a Garden Street. Again -- bit of a coincidence -- the district of Salford had both.

(Just as an aside I discovered that Manchester apparantly had a 'No Garden' Street! It was probably transcribed wrongly -- but made me smile).
