The Everest Missing Parent
« on: Friday 09 August 19 13:24 BST (UK) »
Hi there,

I am hoping you can help me with finding the death of a parent inbetween 2 census returns.

I have an Emily Everest, whom in the 1911 census is looking after her 7 siblings with no parents present. She is 21 on the census and born in Lingfield, Surrey. Her siblings are Leonard, Percy, Doris, Ernest, Sydney and May.

In 1901 I can see both of her parents; William Everest b1860 Lingfield, and Alice Grant b1867 in East Grinstead.

It seems William Everest passed away in 1907 - Godstone, Surrey. But i can not find a death record for his wife Alice between census.

Can anyone help me track her down?

I haven't found Alice Everest in 1911
1 , but there are records for Alice Everest born 1865 , of the parish of Lingfield , in the Workhouse at Godstone in 1905. The records are transcripts and one states Alice Everest + 5 children. Searching under the childrens' names I found

Doris       application 13 Dec 1904
Percy
Raymond        "                "
Leonard
Jessie             "                "

Edit : Alice's application is dated 31 Oct 1905 .

Many thanks for your quick reply! The plot thickens.

If the children are back in a property in 1911, is there such a thing as a 'leaving record' from the workhouse? It's odd that without parents they were able to leave the workhouse are go back to living in a property.

Many Thanks

Tim.

Thank you all so much for the information.

I have now confirmed with a certificate that she indeed married a Mr Sales, so thankyou for the heads up on that one.

It is still a mystery why she left her family of children and married another man a decade later. Would there be anywhere in the records I could follow up on this and get any more details?
