Historical House
« on: Saturday 10 August 19 00:45 BST (UK) »
Hi

I would like to know what records I would need to look for to find the history behind an historical house. The one I am looking for was most likely part of a very large Estate.

I am hoping to find records of who lived in it between 1840 and 1900.

Thanks for any ideas.

Essnell

 Hi Annie,

The house is Shanbally House.  It is in North Tipperary. The Townland is Shanbally.

I am trying to find out who either owned it and or who lived in it between  1840 and the end of the century .   Was it used as a private home or did it have some other use at the time?    Were the O'Calligans involved?

If I can find this information it may be of assistance in verifying of some records.

Thanks
Essnell

The 1901 and 1911 census records will give lots of information on the property (number of rooms, buildings, etc.)
Here's an example of the family- Smithwick family:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Tipperary/Ballymackey/Shanbally/1701135/
Head of household is a farmer & J.P., there are 4 female servants in the household on census night, 23 rooms in house, etc.

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

HI Everyone ,

Thankyou all for all the links.

This is all great information.  I have relatives linked to both Shanbally Castle and to Shanbally House but I am looking for  better evidence than just a mention in a birth record.   or such.  I am hoping to see if I can work out if Shanbally House was a largeish establishment and if the Owners would have employed a number of servants etc. and if those could be traced.  Would there have been servants quarters and  possibly stables and a coach house etc.
John Smithwick was there in 1901 but who was the owner or occupier in about 1840  to 1890.  finding that would be a great help.

Thanks again everyone...... Essnell    I shall look up all the links asap.  There are quite a few.
