Pott/s Family New Mills.
« on: Saturday 10 August 19 23:59 BST (UK) »
Hi, I am hoping someone will be as helpful over this query as my last !
I am trying to research my Grandfathers family.   I have got as far as my Great Great Grandfather,Thomas Pott, b1810 New Mills . He was married to Martha, b1813 New Mills. I have 2 possible maiden names for her, Crossley and Mason and I'm not convinced either are correct!
I have a possible Father for Thomas, Emmanuel ? No d.o.b I am eager to go as far back , by whichever family member I can. Problem I am facing is that Potts is such a common name in that area.  Any help very grateful Thankyou

1851 has several children born after 1837.  Look up their births on freebmd then use GRO online to get mothers maiden name

Thomas Pott 1849 and William 1846 both show mmn as Mason

Quite a gap between Christiana b 1838 and Ann Eliza b 1844

Marriage is on FS and was at Manchester Cathedral 23.9.1833.  Both shown as “of this parish” and were bachelor & spinster.  Witnesses surnames vague but neither were Pott or Mason

1851 shows birthdate 1810 which fits with the baptism 26.11.1809 Mellor on FS - parents Imanuel (Emmanuel) and Christian

However - also a baptism 26.3.1809 in Hayfield - parents William & Peggy

1851 shows his birthplace as New Mills

Thank you. I'm still confused , but I think mmn must be Mason, so Martha Mason. I don't know whether to pursue Emmanuel and Christiana, I found mmn as Platt, I think! Sounds foreign , Christiana.

Platt is an old Lancashire name, so not foreign.
