Can anyone help me locate FAR MOOR on a map in 1841?
« on: Wednesday 14 August 19 12:53 BST (UK) »
I have found my ancestors on a census, in 1841, at 'Far Moor' in Lockwood, Almondbury.

The first page of the census includes a description of other road names being 'The Manchester Old Turnpike Road', 'Stile Lane' and 'Pinfold Well Road'.

Could anyone help at all?

Many Thanks

Have you looked at historic maps on National Library of Scotland website? They can be magnified.
Do you know if Far Moor was a property e.g. a farm or an area?
What about a tithe map? They were drawn mid-century.

  • Manners cost nothing, and are worth the effort.

I can find several references to "Far Moor" between the 1700's and mid 1850's, then the name disappeares.

Later than Malky's reference but at a larger scale

You may know that Lockwood is in the parish of Almondbury, but is a separate area. The turnpike road was fairly long. Can you give the census reference please?

I think I found the census pages HO107 pce 1274 book 9; the last entry of previous book is Yews Hill; then book 9 starts Far Moor for about 3 pages, then Junction House, Buckhouse/Backhouse/Barkhouse Terrace, Bottom of Moor [9 pages] Mark Bottoms also mentions people living at the Wounded Hussar -

states this pub in Manchester Road. It is also mentioned here:

Far Moor cannot have been far away.

It's the one on the far side of every valley, half lost in the mist.  I'm only half joking.

Here it is, with no name in 1854.
(Pinfold Well is visible though)
