I meant the newspaper local to his residence. There may, or may not, have been an actual obituary but local notes might have mentioned his passing.

Hi Aghadowey. His place of residence is a blank page. His records say he was from Tralee, Co Kerry but inquiries there, even with the help of a local historian, have produced nothing so far. As indicated by Daithi's response, the address at Sir John Rogerson Quay , Dublin is not specific to this man. He doesn't appear to have had any Belfast connection beyond the ship.
I suspect the answer, if one still exists, lies somewhere in Kerry.

I think you are confusing several different John Greaney about the same age which is making this perhaps a bit more difficult than it should be.
So, starting at the beginning-
JOHN GREANEY, aged 41, was a Fireman on ss Fair Head and died when she was sunk at her moorings in Belfast Harbour by a German bomb on 5 May 1941. The family were originally from Tralee but he also had an address at Sir John Rogerson Quay in Dublin -possibly a sister's address. The family were Catholic. He is not buried in Milltown or any of the municipal cemeteries in Belfast
Does any one out there have any idea where John Greaney is buried.?

Where are you starting this search from? his service records or a family connections (you've mentioned a possible sister)?

Hi
I believe there were two John Greaneys on that boat. One of them, John Greaney the fireman, was my grandfather's brother. He had had spent some time in Chicago (some of which was spent as Al Capone's driver, so I am told) before returning to Ireland and then back to the US where he became a merchant seaman. I have not been able to find a burial for him. He was born 30 May 1898, Derrymore, Kerry, Ireland and died 5 May 1941 Belfast, Antrim, Northern Ireland.
