John GREANEY WW2
« on: Wednesday 14 August 19 15:54 BST (UK) »
JOHN GREANEY, aged 41, was a Fireman on ss Fair Head and died when she was sunk at her moorings in Belfast Harbour by a German bomb on 5 May 1941. The family were originally from Tralee but he also had an address at Sir John Rogerson Quay in Dublin -possibly a sister's address. The family were Catholic. He is not buried in Milltown or any of the municipal cemeteries in Belfast

Does any one out there have any idea where John Greaney is buried.?

John Greaney is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial in London. Tower Hill Memorial commemorates men of the Merchant Navy and Fishing Fleets who gave their lives and have no grave but the sea.

Thanks, Tony. That's the theory about the Tower Hill Memorial but there are known cases of casualties whose name appears on the Memorial but who do in fact have confirmed earth burials. They are no doubt a small minority.

There are two Greaney's listed in the Irish Newspapers for 1941.
John Greaney, Mallow, Wireless Officer  Irish Examiner May 12
J Greaney 4 Sir John Rogerson's Quay Fireman Irish Independent Sept 20
both merchant navy, nothing about burial of either.
Given when they were in the paper are you sure the Greaney who died May 5th was the fireman?

Ah the Wireless Officer's ship was torpedoed in March.

The Belfast Blitz:

"Many bodies could not be identified. Mass graves for the unclaimed bodies were dug in the Milltown and Belfast City Cemeteries."

Sinann. Confusing - and intriguing. Any chance you can let me have the insertion from the Irish Independent at Sept 20 ?
