Helen Horn died 1893 Peterhead
« on: Friday 16 August 19 22:39 BST (UK) »
Helen Copland (nee Horn) died 1893 in Peterhead and age given as 83 years parents given as Horn and Williamson no first names.  She was the widow of William Copland.  They married 1834 at Cabrach, Parish of Rathven, no witnesses listed.
In the 1841 census it says she was born in Scotland.
1851 census she was born in Cabrach
1861 - 1891 she was born in Glass
Children were
                     John 1835-1879      Witness James Horn
                     William 1837 - 1919
                     Alexander 1839-1842   Witness Alexander Horn
                     Peter 1841-1911
                     Robert 1843-1917
                     Janet 1844-1887
                     George 1846-1869
                     Adam 1848-1914
                     David 1851-1926
                     Helen 1853 - 1948.
What I am looking for is the parents of Helen Horn.   One suggestion on Ancestry was John Horn(e) and Betty (Elizabeth) Williamson but on looking at them all of their family are born in Caithness.  Another suggestion was that the surname was not Williamson but McWilliam and the parents were James Horn and Janet McWilliam whose children were born in Cabrach.  Any idea how I can find out for sure.  Helen is my 3rd Great Grandmother and unless i'm sure of her parentage she may be as far as I can go down that line.  Any suggestions or help would be gratefully appreciated, thanks.

Have you looked at her death registration - this should give you her parents details (if they were known to the person registering the death)

Its available on Scotlands People www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Who was the informant on the death certificate? There is a good chance they may not have got Helen's parents names correct. Have you managed to identify the witnesses, James & Alexander Horn? They may have been Helen's brothers. Their death certificates may confirm that they had the same parents. Is there a headstone on Helen's grave? Does the memorial inscription give any clues? There may even be other family members in the same lair or in adjoining lairs.

Experts at building brick walls  ;)

Checking the church indexes shows no Helen Horn born between 1800 and 1820 in Peterhead (The Peterhead Parish records are quite extensive as far as births are concerned  - 1668 to 1854)
but widening the search a little shows only 17 Helen Horns born and recorded in the Church of Scotland records (2 in the RC records and none in the "other" churches)

This one :-

Hellen Horn the daughter of JAMES HORN & JANET MCWILLIAM - born/baptised 30/09/1814
in Cabrach
FR 269 (FR269) 177/ 10 258

This is likely the source of the McWilliam parentage theory - Unfortunately this does not mean that she is "your" Helen.

I have had a look at the Index on Scotlands People for a birth for a Helen Horn between 1800 and 1810 in the area around Huntly - Carbrach and Glass are only a few miles away. Unfortunately nothing is coming up. As you probably already know not all of the pre 1855 records have survived.

Looking at the births of her sons John in 1835 and Alexander in 1839 as you have listed the witnesses were James and Alexander Horn. Could they have been Helen's brothers?

On the SP Index there is an Alexander Horn born in 1819 in Huntly. A James Horn born in 1807 in Carbrach. The parents of both are James Horn and Janet McWilliam.

Hope this helps.

There is a James & Janet Horn in the 1841 census, at Drywells, Cabrach. Both ages shown as 50, James' occupation is a brewer. No sign of them in 1851 though.

The informant on her death certificate was her son Peter and she is buried with Copland family in the Old Churchyard at Peterhead.  Alexander and James could possibly be her brothers but could James actually be her father as looking at the witnesses again it says he is from Dryw?? could this be Drywells, Cabrach as in 1841 there is a James and Janet Horn living there aged 50 or am I clutching at straws?  Thanks.
