Glos millstone maker marries in London -- why?
« on: Tuesday 20 August 19 11:31 BST (UK) »
Just a quick question in case any of you have any ideas...
George Roach (b. 1859) was born Rangeworthy, apprenticed in Gloucester and worked as a millstone maker throughout his life. However he married a London girl in 1888 in St Olave's, Southwark. Any suggestions as to why? I do see she might have come to Gloucester as a servant and he followed her back to marry her in her home parish, but that sounds an unlikely scenario at that date, surely? Any thoughts on this small point welcomed. Just curious!

I have a couple who seemed to have run away to get married from Essex to London, he married his sister in law and back in the village the following year on the son's baptism the vicar had written about it not being a legitimate marriage, so I suppose they did it on the quiet so they didn't get found out, but of course they didf, only reason I can think of as neither of them were Londoners, they were country folk

I would have thought as you said, he married a London girl so married in her parish/area.

Trains had been travelling to London from that area for quite a while by 1888 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Western_Railway

?

There is a Silina/Selina CLODE aged 23 (correct age for later census returns) Fur? Worker - born Bermondsey, Surrey on the 1881 census at
Aos Gladstones, Convalescent Home, Church End in Essex.

?

Perhaps Selina moved to Gloucester for 'fresher air' and work at Mary Ann followed her - and they lived together on later census returns.  On the 1911 census, Selina is working as a Nurse.

Thank you for your responses! (let the train take the strain ...!)
I do think that the two sisters were anxious to stay together.
It is an interesting suggestion that the marriage simply took place in London because that was her home and a train journey from Glos was not a problem! Often the simplest solutions are the answer.

Have you a copy of the Marriage, which would give residence addresses etc. and witnesses.

If George ROACH was marrying in London, but living in Gloucester - the marriages could have possibly been by Licence.

George may even have been working on London.
