But there is also the name Cruckshank in the tree. Ancestry seems to be Irish.

On the death record his birth is written as August 1851  not 1861

The further back in the census there are several families by the name of Saul, so you may have to trace all of them to get the right children assigned to the right parents.
Religion may play a part, some are Methodist some Church of England others Protestant.

The 1945 Voter's list has John C Patterson (engineer) and Gladys Patterson at 5 Thirty-second St., York West.

Yep, I think this is them. So maybe search marriages from 1945 on back ?
