O'Shea Brothers - Was This Photo Taken In South Africa?
« on: Friday 23 August 19 06:01 BST (UK) »
 ;D Hello RootsChatters,

The photo attached is my husband's G G'F Thomas Joseph O'Shea (left) 1869-1954 and his brother Jeremiah 1864-1926, both born County Kerry, Ireland who emigrated with their family to NSW, Australia per ship "Norval" in 1880.

No one in the family knows where this photo was taken. Wondering if someone with more knowledge of Sth African photos from this era- 1895-1900 can verify its origin. Would be extremely grateful for any assistance,

Sincerely Pilgrims Progress  :D

Maybe to help others with a decision, what makes you believe it's South Africa?

When were the brothers in South Africa as the transport & their dress may help?

I can't help with either of the above but the pic looks as though the lads are wearing flowers for a wedding?

Did someone marry in SA?

Looks like South Africa - the horned ricksha puller was especially associated with Durban:

Do you know which route the Norval took?

Hi Rosinish, ;D tonepad,  ;D and Ruskie,  ;D

Thank you for your quick response and interesting observations. The family arrived per Norval in Sydney, NSW, Australia 1880. In that period most boats took the newer and faster Suez Canal route. This photo is obviously much later than that. I estimate 1895-1905.

There doesn’t appear to be any evidence that either men were there serving in Boer Wars 1899-1902.

It never occurred to me that they may have been part of a wedding party as the buttonholes suggest. Perhaps one of the brothers unaccounted for may have married in Sth Africa.  Family legend says their mother Ellen Mary didn’t settle well in her new home and returned alone to Ireland.  I am unable to find her death in Australia which supports this.  ???

In any case thank you for attempting to help. It is much appreciated and I hope that anyone else seeing this topic might know more than we do. Do any of you know any other site that I could inquire re the origin of the photo?

Kind Regards,

Pilgrims Progress  :)

Hi hepburn :D and Ruskie ;D,

Thank you both for your information. I agree the man far right in group of 4 "Ricksha Boys" could be the one in the photo of the Thomas and Jeremiah O'Shea or possibly a relative  ;D.

Found this additional site which was helpful. https://historymatters.co.za/content/amahashi-african-rickshaw-pullers-early-twentieth-century-durban-25-march-2014

Very much appreciate your input and anyone else's.

Kind Regards,
