Thank you for your quick response and interesting observations. The family arrived per Norval in Sydney, NSW, Australia 1880. In that period most boats took the newer and faster Suez Canal route. This photo is obviously much later than that. I estimate 1895-1905.
There doesn’t appear to be any evidence that either men were there serving in Boer Wars 1899-1902.
It never occurred to me that they may have been part of a wedding party as the buttonholes suggest. Perhaps one of the brothers unaccounted for may have married in Sth Africa. Family legend says their mother Ellen Mary didn’t settle well in her new home and returned alone to Ireland. I am unable to find her death in Australia which supports this.

In any case thank you for attempting to help. It is much appreciated and I hope that anyone else seeing this topic might know more than we do. Do any of you know any other site that I could inquire re the origin of the photo?
