Understanding 1851 census extract re Benthorpe family
« on: Sunday 25 August 19 12:35 BST (UK) »
Hi All

I wonder if we could get some help in understanding this document, an extract from the 1851 census for Londonderry (relating to main thread here www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=817661.0)

As always hopeful but struggling with Irish records, I thought this might connect to Sarah and her family (if confirmed  ::)) http://censussearchforms.nationalarchives.ie/search/cs/details.jsp?id=41178

There is a link to the image at the bottom. I think this shows a note on the left of the children of John Snr and wife Sarah.  Don't undertand the document really nor the reference to Mrs Harron in Glasgow  ???

Clip above starts from pg 6 #53.

The key player is daughter Sarah, who ends up in Glasgow. Some of her siblings have also been found in Scotland in later years.

Many thanks for any help and assistance.

Monica  :)

I would understand it as that in July 1916 Sarah applied for an extract of the 1851 Census.  At the time she applied her address was c/o Mrs Harron in Glasgow.

From the information supplied by Sarah, the officials checked two townlands but were not able to find the census entry - this would account for the comment (bottom right) in effect saying: if you can't provide accurate information, try applying to the local clergyman for a certificate of baptism.

Edit: Agreeing with Philip!
Typed up so posting:
________________________________________________________
Application: 7-6-16 (7 June 1916) to search the 1851 Irish Census:

I (Applicant) Sarah Bentrop, c/o Mrs Harron
Address: 57 King Street, S.S. Glasgow

Parents: John Bentrop or Benthrop and Sarah Docherty

Residence in 1851:  2 possibles provided
   A: Linsnamuck, Maghera, Loughinsholin, Londonderry
   B: Drumballyhagan, Kilcronaghan, Loughinsholin, Londonderry

The notation : Clark  - could be the occupation of the father?
Children who should be in the household: Mary, John, Ellen, Robert, Sarah

Result: Not found (nf) at either address. Paid £25, 11s for search A, and £25, 14s for search B
(or is it in shillings & pence?)

The searching clerk says:
Unless you can state accurately the name of the Townland which Sarah Bentrop was living in 1851, the Department is unable to assist you in the matter. If you have not already done so, you should apply to the local clergy man for a cert.  or bap. (signed asp?), 23-8-16. (23rd Aug 1916).

The answer was mailed back to the Applicant (Sarah), and 2 shillings was also returned.

Note: I wonder if the notation on the right - is the clerk questioning the fact there are 2 suggested address.
i p f s    - or - I p f o

Maybe that  means: ipso facto
Exact address in 1851?

Cheers

The applicant was Sarah Bentrop and her address is c/o (care of) Mrs. Harron of 57 King St., Glasgow.
Sarah said her parents were John Bentrop & Sarah Docherty and that in 1851 they were living in the townland of Lisnamuck in Maghera parish, Co. Londonderry. Looks as though the family weren't there and her next 'guess' is Drumballyhagan in Kilcronaghan Parish. It wasn't uncommon for people to move around (especially labourers) or people applying for pension to be unclear about exactly where they lived at a given period. Remember that the application was 1916 and 1851 census was 65 years earlier. Also pension age was 70.
Sarah said older siblings were Mary, John, Ellen & Robert.
Two searches were done for the above two address and the family were not found in either.
Advice in bottom corner says if she cannot provide exact townland residence in 1851 she can apply to clergy for certificate of baptism.

Lisnamuck townland- https://www.townlands.ie/londonderry/loughinsholin/maghera/lisnamuck/
Drumballyhagan- https://www.townlands.ie/londonderry/loughinsholin/kilcronaghan/drumballyhagan/

You can see both townland march each other and the family probably lived in this vicinity at some point.
