ST Werburgh, Hanbury
« on: Wednesday 28 August 19 11:50 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I wondered if anybody could help me with finding a burial site in this churchyard.
My ancestors name is William Burton b 24 August 1575-d 06 April 1645.  That is all I know of him, according to my family tree.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks. Chris.

Hi Colin,
Thanks for your reply. So am I to understand that my ancestor is buried in this church yard, and if so, how will I find it?
Many thanks
Chris

Greetings, and a slightly belated welcome to Rootschat.

FamilySearch has a transcript confirming the burial, but there isn't a freely available image of the register page.

The burial register of St Werburgh's Church will show the date of burial, but it will not show the precise location of the grave, and you would be unlikely to find a legible gravestone (if one was ever erected) from 1645.

If William BURTON was sufficiently important to have been buried inside the church there might be a grave slab or a memorial on the wall, otherwise it will be impossible to trace the precise spot where he was buried.

(As a sidenote, I find that churches are often the only buildings remaining where I can locate the presence of ancestors, so I attach a photo of the church to their record as the only visual memory of them that I can find).

Hello Phillip,
Thank you for your input. William was an author who wrote History of Leicestershire. Whether this makes him important, I could not say. His brother Robert Burton B D OF Christchurch, Oxon was also an author, who wrote The Anatomy of Melancholy. b 8 February 1578 d 1639. And that will be my next project. I will visit the church and make further enquires. Many thanks again.

If you google 'wishful thinking staffordshire' you will get a list of churches and details of the headstones for each churchyard. I have checked myself but it doesn't list William Burton. However it is worth checking for your own satisfaction.
