Marriage of John Frederick Louis Beland and Ann Broten
« on: Saturday 31 August 19 22:09 BST (UK) »
Hi all,
I've had no luck finding the marriage of this couple, which likely would have taken place around 1800-1810 in London.  A few background facts:
  • John Frederick Lewis Beland, a.k.a. Johann Friedrich Ludwig Beland, was a German merchant born in 1772 in Celle. He moved to London and became a naturalized British citizen in 1803.  His trading firm was located on Rood Lane at Fenchurch Street.
  • Ann Broten was an Englishwoman. I don't have her birth record.
  • Ann appears on the 1851 census (as Ann Beland), which indicates that she was born around 1774-75 at "Tooley St. Bos". I think this may refer to Tooley St. in Boston, Lincolnshire. I haven't found her in the 1841 census. She may have been in Germany at the time.
  • Ann died 25 Sep. 1851 at Islington, Middlesex at the age of 76. I have her civil death record and church burial record (Highgate Cemetery of Saint James, Parish of Saint Pancras, County Middlesex)
  • Their first known child was Frederick Beland, christened 1811, so they likely married around or before that date

I have an image of the couple (it looks like a drawing).  They seem to have been fairly well to do until the Beland firm was bankrupted in 1812 as a result of the Napoleonic wars. So it's a bit odd to me that their marriage record is so difficult to find.  I also have not found any birth record for Ann.

Would appreciate any assistance or tips!

Thanks.

Welcome to rootschat

1851 census Islington, I would think it more likely to be a Tooley Street in London.  It looks as though it says Bow  :-\

Thanks both - that would make sense. Although still no birth record for Southwark that I can find.

Two sources: one is a 1973 article on the Beland family from the newsletter "Der Wandsbeker" which states that J.F.L. Beland married an English woman "Ann geb. Broten"; and the second is the set of portraits of the couple that I mentioned earlier.  Under the wife's image is written "Anna Beland geb. Broten". On the back, someone (possibly my grandmother, who owns the pictures) wrote "Susanna Anna Beland nee Brodten".

Are the records of the German Lutheran Church anywhere on line?
Brodten is also a German name so perhaps they married there.

Still looking for Ann w/o JFL Beland.

1841Lewisham Kent- Looks like Percival House.
Ann Beland age 25 school mistress not born in County. In the household of Serpentia Stone and others all school mistresses.
I think this Ann is the same as 1851 and perhaps the one baptized as Elfrieda 4 September 1814 in Stoke Newington.
Died 1897 unmarried.
