William Poad
« on: Sunday 01 September 19 10:09 BST (UK) »
Hope someone could sort this problem out.

William Poad 1800-1877 born St Dominick Cornwall, parents John and Mary Poad.  On familysearch William's wife is Elizabeth. They have 7 children (so far may be more) On the 1841/51 census Mother in law is living with them and her name is Elizabeth Clark so naturally I gather Elizabeth's maiden name is Clark but, five of the children's baptisms give the Mother's maiden name as Hawking, the 2 younger children the Mother is just Elizabeth.  Now to add to the confusion on the gro record site Mother's maiden name is Pratt.
The children
Richard b 1826
John b 1827
Elizabeth b 1832
Benjamin b 1834
Edwin b 1837
James b 1839
Samuel b 1843

Any help would be appreciated

Have just found the marriage on the Cornwall record site Elizabeth Hawking Clarke married 1825 in St Dominick.

Guess little James's birth was not registered.

could this be little James' birth reg?
James Poad Sept qtr 1839 Liskeard
Baptism
James Poad
baptised 22 Dec 1839 St Dominick Cornwall
Parents William & Elizabeth

Not often are Mother's maiden names recorded - possibly on original parents are listed as Wiliam & Elizabeth Hawking - then next column surname Poad
Which would signify Hawking was Elizabeth's middle name - not maiden name
I would suggest Pratt is possibly a mistranscription of Poad

the birth reg for James Poad mmn Pratt is a different family. There's a baptism 28 July 1839 in Callington for a James Poad son of John, hatter, & Maria. There's another registration in jun qtr 1844 for George Phillips Poad mmn Pratt. Both boys are with their parents & other siblings in Callington on 1851 census HO107/1901 folio 184 pg 30, Maria shown as born in Cullompton, Devon.

John Phillips Poade married Maria Pratt 18 July 1828 in Cullompton.

This fits baptisms of Richard 1826, John 1827, William 1830, Elizabeth 1832, and Benjamin 1834.  Spelling variants are HOCKING and HOCKIN on the Cornwall OPC transcripts for St Dominick.  The baptisms for Edwin 1837, James 1839, and Samuel 1843, just name Elizabeth with no middle name.

HAWKING and HOCKING (with variants) are both surnames found in Cornwall.  My feeling is that HAWKING is probably correct as there is a possible in Calstock (under five miles from St Dominick):
Marriage 26 Oct 1792 - Richard CLARK and Elizabeth HAWKINGS
Baptism 21 Mar 1802 - Elizabeth CLARK daughter of Richard and Elizabeth
