Meaning of "Bman" (profession) in census
« on: Sunday 01 September 19 19:17 BST (UK) »
In the 1841 census Charles and Grace Pascoe are in Egloshayle.  His profession is noted as what looks like "Bman".

Does anyone know what that could stand for?

Many thanks

there are other men on that census page with same occupation - William Cornish & Henry Lobb. On the opc database, there is one baptism in 1843 to Henry Lobb & wife Lidia where he is noted as bargeman. On others he is noted as labourer as is William Cornish.

the address in 1841 is Clapper Marsh but enumerated just before Slades Bridge, so have a look at the third paragraph under Transport and Industry

1851 census Charles is living with his son Samson & family and is enumerated as pauper (bargeman), also noted as blind. HO107/1904 folio 727 pg 27.

Bargeman - I would never have guessed that.

Thank you so much for the information about barges on the River Camel which really adds interest to this part of the family.  I had not been able to find Charles in 1851 so that is very helpful too.

We are going to Wadebridge soon and will seek out Clapper Marsh cottage.  It could be Charles's old home..... ::)

Many thanks

not an obvious abbreviation.  ::)  There was another man on the 1841 page who was noted as b.smith and on parish registers he was noted as blacksmith. The enumerator doesn't seem to have stuck to the accepted abbreviations for that census.

Thanks again for your advice and taking the time to explain.

All I knew was that "Bman" could not have meant "Businessman"!  ;D
