Help with my Hockley ancestors.
« on: Monday 02 September 19 21:59 BST (UK) »
Hi again..  I have now got stuck on my Fathers line..I was researching my Grandmother's family, the Days, now starting from her husband Frank Hockley, Chelmsford I am stuck at HENRY HOCKLEY , think my GGG Grandad:/?      Henry was born around 1750, but I have Baptisms 1756 , 1762. High Easter and Willingale Doe, respectively.
There is a question mark over dates. He married MARY HORSENELL DOB 1753 aprox.   They married in 1774.
However , their son, my Grandfather William Hockley, was born 1767 and there's a Henry, 1772. After marriage I have a Mary and Jemima. I feel I might have dates wrong here.
William, 1767 was baptised in Dunmow. He married in 1793 , Sarah Stokes, I think she was a widow so probably not her surname. Help!!

What is the earliest information you are sure of?
Is it William c 1767?
So you have a Burial for him to confirm his dob?

Trish :)

If the Marriage was 28 October 1793 All Saints, High Roding, Essex then the Bride was Sarah STOKES a Spinster**

A William Hockley, Widower** also married a Sarah STOKES, Spinster, 7 Sep 1800, St Mary the Virgin,
Great Dunmow.
He was of that Parish, she was of Little Canfield

So I think you need to back up a little.

Who are you descended from that you have as a child of William/Sarah?

Also a person born 1767 would be 26 in 1793 and 33 in 1800.

Tracing back this Frank Hockley I get to a William b abt 1802/3 in Stebbing. The only match I can find in Stebbing is a William bapt on 03 Oct 1802 s/o Daniel and Mary. There is a possible Daniel on 1841 census, but not with any obvious family members

Frank "Hockley" the son of George and Mary Ann Hockley born 1872 on the 1881 census was
registered as Frank Martin illegitimate son of Mary, so was his older brother George in 1871.

George Hockley does not marry Mary Martin until 1877, however he acknowledges Ernest born 1874 as his as Ernest is registered as Ernest Hockley mother maiden name Martin in 1874.

It would take a DNA test to find out the father(s) of Frank and George to see if they are related to
Ernest, William(Willie) and Emma (1881 census again)

Oh good grief.  8) I have 1842 Trish death.  I will list my Hockley Descendants from my Grandfather Frank Hockley on a new reply.
I would be very surprised if he wasn't a Hockley They all looked alike!  Grandad Frank was Chief Compositor Printer on thecEssex Chronicle all his life. I have newspaper articles online. He also umpired Chelmsford Cricket team.
