parents of JOHN THOMAS STRANGE
« on: Tuesday 03 September 19 21:19 BST (UK) »
Hi,
Am trying to trace parents of JOHN  THOMAS STRANGE,  mmn WOODAS  1867 BELPER [gro.gov]
The problem is I cannot find a marriage for Strange & Woodas.
I have found an 1855 marriage for:
John Strange & Elizabeth Woodhouse [Woodas?] 1855 Codnor and Loscoe [Basford], Nottinghamshire
can anyone find any connection between these facts?
Thanks,
Mel C

Have marriage in 1895 Barnsley to Phillis Elizabeth Smith [family fact]

I'd say that was a very good possibility.
Especially if you're in Derbyshire.
If you 'drop' the 'h' of house, they sound almost identical.

Added: I've also seem 'Woodisse' in Derbyshire records.
Be worth searching on sites using 'Wood*' if that works.
Lane, Burgess: Cheshire. Finney, Rogers, Gilman:Derbys
Cochran, Nicol, Paton, Bruce:Scotland. Bertolle:London
Bainbridge, Christman, Jeffs: Staffs

Woodhouse would definately be pronounced Woodass in  Derbyshire villages at that time (and parts of Nottinghamshire (e.g. Mansfield Woodhouse was/is known as Mansfield Woodass -or even shortened to just Woodass -as it is by a true local nowadays (myself included)

Suz
Thornhill, Cresswell, Sisson, Harriman, Cripps, Eyre, Walter, Marson, Battison, Holmes, Bailey, Hardman, Fairhurst Noon-mainly in Derbys/Notts-but also Northampton, Oxford, Leics, Lancs-England
