Looking for family in Kinghorn area before 1817 ??
« on: Wednesday 04 September 19 09:44 BST (UK) »
Can anyone suggest how I can get further back than a marriage in 1817 please,
My maternal ancestors were David Gray and Susan Flockart or Suzanne Flockhart. Married in the parish of North Leith 1817 Kinghorn Fife.
I've traced their life forward from this date as after their marriage they moved to Bristol where David became a Coachman on an estate and the family are still in the Bristol area today.
All my mother knew was that she had Scottish ancestry called Gray and that one may have been a baker...not much to go on.
Thank you.

Am I right that David died before the 1841 Census?

I can see Susanna and children in Clifton, Glous in 1841

Do you have this Baptism?

DAVID MOFFAT Gray    10 Jun 1821, Parish Church, Kinghorn, Fife
Parents David/Susan nee Flockart

Death Regs;

GRAY, DAVID age 56
GRO Reference: 1840  S Quarter in THE CLIFTON UNION  Volume 11  Page 223
So born c 1784**

GRAY, SUSAN age 45
GRO Reference: 1846  J Quarter in BRISTOL  Volume 11  Page 113
(c 1801)

I see  they Bapt children Glous 1823/1834

As David is not on the 1841 Census it is hard to know where he was born.

Hello Trish.
The information I have for David and Suzanne after they left Scotland is sketchy but as follows.
David Gray 1791-1841(.death cause etc. to be researched.)
Children. Suzanne born 1828
Henry born 1829
Jane born 1830
Edward born 1834
Henry born 1829 is my ancestor and his offspring live in Bristol and I have some details on him.
I have no other information. It is David and Suzanne s life before they left Scotland I am most interested in .My grandmother Annie Matilda Gray is well documented and she like my Mum talked about Scottish ancestry.I hope to visit Kinghorn next year if I can take the Gray family further back than David and Susan.

Its a very difficult one and I have searched everywhere for David 1781-1791 in England and Scotland.

I cant access the 1817 Marriage does it name witnesses?

Children I found on Familysearch.Org christened Glous were;

CHARLES 23 Feb 1817
JAMES 20 Jul 1823
HENRY 26 MAR 1826
SUSANNA    25 May 1828
JANE MARY 07 NOV 1830
EDWARD CHARLES 09 FEB 1834

Then on FreeREG DAVID MOFFAT Gray 1821

My maternal ancestors were David Gray and Susan Flockart or Suzanne Flockhart. Married in the parish of North Leith 1817 Kinghorn Fife.
North Leith is in Midlothian, and is an entirely different place from Kinghorn in Fife.

What you have here is two records of the proclamation of banns, one in the groom's parish and one in the bride's parish.

Have you looked at the originals on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk? These will tell you who came from which parish, and hap to narrow down the search for their parents.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Thankyou. On Scotland's people all I was given was a scan of the original marriage details as given in this post .
marriages Kinghorn. David Gray in this parish and Susan Flockart in the parish of North Leith were married. So this means Susan was the one who was not local to Kinghorn ? If I research the English census,s it should say where she was born.Hope it doesn't just say Scotland
