Monastery, Powerscourt.
« on: Thursday 05 September 19 22:39 BST (UK) »
Is Monastery, Powerscourt a 'Monastery' or an area within Powerscourt?

I have a couple of ancestors that state their residence as 'Monastery, Powersourt' and 'Monastery Parish, Powerscourt' on their marriage certificates.

Thanks.

This link provides a map of Monastery which is a townland in the Civil Parish of Powerscourt.

Use the  +   to zoom in on the map to see Powerscourt House which is situated south west of it.  Hope this helps.

Thanks...that is very helpful.  Now I wonder if my ancestors who were 'Land Steward's', living around Enniskerry & Old Connaught worked at Powerscourt House.

Anyway, thanks again for the link!

It's a beautiful building...I hadn't heard of it before.  I'm putting it on my 'must visit list', for when I visit Ireland one day!

What was your ancestors surname?  I am interested in the 'McMullen's' from that area, although I aren't finding out much about them really.  William McMullen was a 'Land Steward' and born about 1800-1810.  I do wonder if he worked for the owners of 'Powerscourt House'.  This is one of my brick walls!  I just cannot find out what happened to him.

Thanks for sharing.

Hi

Do you know William’s religion?

Also did he marry and if so, do you have his wife’s name?

Regards

It's still a townland north of the village of Enniskerry. It's not part of the Powerscourt estate as it currently exists.

However back in 18oo's things may have been different, but it may just have been a townland and not part of the estate

There are a couple of McMullens buried in the local CoI graveyard, which is part of Powerscourt Parish, but they are recent. One in the 1950's and one in the 1990s. You can check through the text files. There may be other names that are familiar to you.

There are a small number of links to McMullen Marriages and Baptisms both Church of Ireland and Catholic in and around the Enniskerry area. Some are under the Powerscourt CoI parish, some Enniskerry Parish (RC) Some are in Bray and give Frumpstown (normally spelled Phromstown  but pronounced frump) which is a townland to the North of Monastery.  I guess you may have already found these though
