Hi Wendy,

The Pardon for John HILTON (Mary 4) in 1849 was conditional that is, he could not return to the United Kingdom of Great Britain or Ireland.

A Ticket of Leave No 42/2266 was issued for John HILTON (Mary 4) on 28th September 1842 for him to remain in the District of Scone.

This was cancelled due to him getting into trouble and new ToL was reissued No 43/2700 on 10th November 1843 for John to stay in the District of Patrick Plains.

On 11th March 1844 John HILTON was issued with a ToL Passport 44/214 allowing him to go outside of the Patrick Plains District and work for a Mr LARNACH in the District of Liverpool Plains and Morpeth for a period of 12 months.

The Passport ToL was reissued on 45/406 on 12th May 1845 for another 12 months once again working for John LARNACH at Liverpool Plains.

On 5th March 1847 John HILTON was issued with a new ToL Passport No 47/739 allowing him to work for Mr DANGAR at Liverpool Plains for 12 months.

Wendy, do you have his parents' names?  Death registrations here include the name of parents (if known to the informant) which can help immensely.

Is this him?
John HILTON
Baptised 2 April 1803 at  Berwick, Sussex, England
Father:   Thomas Hilton
Mother:   Maria Hilton

If this is the right man there are no registered deaths in NSW with father Thomas - plenty with father's name unknown though.

According to the register of the prison hulk Cumberland, a John HILTON, 30, was convicted of burglary in Lancaster, 3 March 1832 and was sent first to the hulk Cumberland and 'disposed' to NSW on 14 August, 1832.  Another person, John WHITEHEAD, 19, was convicted of burglary in the same court sitting and also sent to NSW in June 1832.
