Sunwell Lane, St John, Antony
« on: Wednesday 18 September 19 22:03 BST (UK) »
I have travelled to Cornwall to see the Farm House at Sunwell, St John, where John DAVEY and his family lived in the mid 1800s.

The lane, like so many roads coloured yellow on the OS map is very narrow, single lane and has very little traffic indeed.

I was surprised that such a narrow quiet lane should have its name "Sunwell Lane" printed on the OS map.  Does anyone know why this is?  Did the lane have some significance in the past?

Many thanks

I assume as it's the road that leads to Sunwell Farm? Some lanes are marked on the OS map, including a much smaller Mud Lane (to the west of Sunwell Farm), not sure why some labelled in particular.

I see the farm was for lease in 1842, is this when your DAVEY took it over?

That's very interesting.   Thank you.

I have only the census records to go on for dates.   I've been to the archives at Kresen Kernow as well as knocking on the farmhouse door!  The very kind people showed us around.  I have been told that lots of information relating to sunwell estate was lost in a fire.

1851 John DAVEY is a Hind in St John Village.
1859 His grandson William Henry MABLEY was born in the farmhouse.
1861 in January his daughter died in the farmhouse.
1861 John.DAVEY is at the farmhouse but an ag lab.  It is a large building for an ag lab's family though.

Any comments would be appreciated -as always! !

Many thanks again
