Hannah Osborn Death or Burial Record
« on: Saturday 21 September 19 09:15 BST (UK) »
Morning

I'm trying to trace the origins of Hannah Osborn (nee Rose) c.1808 of England. Her marriage to Charles Osborn occured in 1829 at Wetheringsett, Suffolk. Shortly after they emmigrated to Canada and produced at least seven children including Parmenus Osborn c.1843.

According to some family tree's the Osborn's ended up in Halton, Ontario, with Hannah listed as dying/buried about 1863 in Nelson. I haven't found any evidence yet to confirm this. Can someone please help me identify when Hannah died and where she might be buried.

Not sure why the birth places of sons Charles, William and Parmanus are opposite on this census (from the 1851 census??)

Evening

Yes I've already seen the above entries, and the confusion regarding which child was born where. Hannah is not seen in the 1871 census so the date of 1863 from several tree's as her date of death seems plausible but it needs confirming.

Does anyone know where the burial records for Nelson, Halton (now part of Burlington?) can be viewed online or, if this is not possible, whom I need to contact?

I have been looking online to see if I can find anything.   No luck so far.

You could try the Burlington library
https://www.bpl.on.ca/

The Halton Peel branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society will have transcripts from the local cemeteries
https://haltonpeel.ogs.on.ca/

Looking at the Ontario Cemetery Finding Aid - there are some Osborn(e)s listed in Halton County, but not Hannah

Have you contacted any tree owners to see where they found the 1863 death date for Hannah?

Obituary for daughter Charlotte Osborne Gilliam is in the Globe and Mail  2 March 1935.  It says that she died Wednesday last.  She was the widow of the late William Gilliam.  She was in her 87th year.  She was Bronte's oldest resident and had over 50 family members here.  She was born in Port Nelson and came to Bronte with her husband over 60 years ago.  Four sons, 2 daughters, 18 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren survive.  Interment Bronte Cemetery.

Hannah is likely buried in a cemetery in the Port Nelson area (at the bottom end of Nelson Township, Halton county...as you mentioned above is now part of the City of Burlington).

There is also a very interesting piece on Charlotte in the Toronto Star on Feb 3, 1934, page 22.  I don't know if this is in any of the online trees..I don't have a current Ancestry subscription, so I can't see trees on that site at the moment.

Bronte: "Aunt Lottie" Looking for an Axe.  Would Chop Wood at Age of 85.
There is a photo of her.
It says that a year ago, she climbed on her stove to clean the pipe and fell off.  She fractured her leg and wrenched her hip.  She had to stay in bed for 3 months, then used crutches for a considerable time afterwards.   She is now as active and healthy as she ever was.  Her daughter Mrs T Cotter said that they have to hide the axe from her or she would be out cutting wood.  Already this winter, she has pieced 3 quilt tops, without using spectacles.

It says that Mrs Gilliam was born Charlotte Osborne at Port Nelson, a few miles from where she now lives.  Her husband a lake mariner and later mate of a Toronto ferry boat, died some years ago.  Mrs Gilliam has 6 children, 19 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren.

She is known as "Aunt Lottie" in Bronte.  She is deeply religious.  She loves to garden and intends to plant a garden in the Spring.
