Looking to trace THOMAS WAKE b1770 Huntingdon
« on: Sunday 22 September 19 21:52 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help with my search to trace Thomas Wake.  He married Elizabeth (no surname) children Mary Anne, thomas, William, Elizabeth in Farcet, Huntingdon.
It is Thomas that I am interested in.  He probably died in 1835.  Who were his parents?

There are a couple more children, John and Rebecca.
All the children seem to have been born in Stanground.

This is presumably his burial?

Burial date    21 Jan 1835
Burial person forename    Thomas
Burial person surname    WAKE
Person age    65
Burial person abode    Farcet Fen

Can't see a baptism  for him in that area ???
There is a baptism in Lincolnshire and one in Hampshire, neither that close to Hunts.
There is a marriage for a Thomas Wake to Elizabeth Gay in Norfolk on 24th April 1782 but it could be a coincidence (EDIT obviously the wrong man)

There is a  marriage in Lincolnshire has bride Elizabeth TOOMBS of Farcet, Hunts.

18 May 1803 at Sutton St James, Thomas WAKE (batchelor, otp) to Elizabeth TOOMBS (spinster, Farcet, Hunts) by licence. Witnesses John DOWSE and Elvin TODD.

The marriage date fits with the earliest baptism (William 1805). I can't see any baptism in Lincolnshire that would fit with this couple, so a definite possibility to my mind.

If this is the correct Thomas - there is this baptism which is a possibility (though you'd need to do a bit more research to establish the DOWSE connection, looking at the witnesses for the marriage above):

11 Sep 1769 Thomas John Dowse WAKE at St Mary, Long Sutton. Parents William (grazier) and Elizabeth. (on FreeReg)

There is this astonishing item in the Stamford Mercury. (Aug. 9, 1833):

"Mr. Thomas Wake, living in Farcet Fen, near Peterborough, has been labouring under the dropsy for two years, during which period he has been tapped the extraordinary number of 34 times, and nearly 100 gallons of water have been taken from him: he is getting better."

Fantastic, thank you.  what a fact,  although 2 years of dropsy can't have been pleasant, what a story!
this all helps me with the next generation back.

the Dowse connection makes sense as his mother Eliz Gray was a widower when she married his father William Wake in 1767 in Long Sutton, Lincs.  Her first husband was possibly Thomas Gray, married in 1764, Long Sutton, he was a grazier, and with whom she had Elizabeth and Rebekkah possibly twins. Whilst I've not been able to locate the death of Thomas Gray, can anyone help out here? It must have been before 1767.

Eliz Gray's maiden name was Dowse, hence when she married William Wake in 1767 and had Thomas Wake in 1770, he is known as Thomas John Dowse? I've not been able to find the date of death of this Eliz Gray, particularly as daughter also Eliz Gray.

There is a Thomas GRAY aged 54 buried at St Nicholas Lutton on 7 Oct 1764 (not too far from Long Sutton), a possibility? (Especially as Elizabeth and William WAKE's son John Dowse WAKE appears to have been buried there in 1769, though baptised at Long Sutton.) Although I suppose that doesn't really work with the baptisms of Rebekah and Elizabeth, unless he died when their mother was pregnant.
