SWITZERLAND Certificat d’origine pour une personne non mariee

I have just received a copy of this document for my grandfather, issued in Valais in 1910.
Would anyone be able to tell me what purpose it served.  Is it a sort of passport?

(apologies for a missing accent in mariee....don’t know how to do one on an ipad!)

I realise I ought to mention that he was born in 1891, so obviously wasn’t a birth certificate. It contains physical characteristics (colour of hair, eyes, etc), hence my guess as some kind of ID.

A swiss citizen is also a citizen of a town . I think your document is a certificate that says from wich town (in Valais) this person was , obviously (personne non mariée) this person wasn't married.

Thank you, well as I said this certificate states that Edouard BUSSIEN, son of Joseph BUSSIEN and Marie (formerly RODS) was a citizen (bourgeois) of the town of PORT VALAIS, in the canton of MONTHEY and that he always will be welcomed and treated as a citizen of this town.
In case of marriage this certificate would have to be sent to the council of the town that would send back a certificate for a married person (after having checked that the marriage was real)
  signed BUSSIEN (secretary of the council)

physical description = born 1891  , height 1 meter and 61 centimeters, grey eyes , black hair, ordinary nose , average mouth

Edouard was a "voiturier" and a "roulier" (same work) = a carter
I read Montoie (a town ) Le Talus ?

Thank you Joger, most helpful.  Marie maiden name was Roch.
I cannot find a logical place to match Montoie, nor Le Talus, nearby to Bouveret VS which is the family home.

PORT VALAIS, in the canton of MONTHEY

MONTHEY is the name of a place not of a canton. It is situated near Lake Geneva and part of the canton Valais.

The place of origin must not be the same as the place of birth or the place where you are living.
Usually children and wives had/have the same place of origin as their father or husband.
In earlier days the authorities of the place of origin had to pay if you were poor or sick and had to live in an asylum.

Sorry ,Svenja 's right, the document says : town of Port Valais , in the district of MONTHEY, canton of VALAIS, Switzerland.

There is an Avenue de Montoie and a cemetery of Montoie in Lausanne .

Le Bouveret is part of Port Valais, but it does not mean that Edouaerd stayed all his life in Port Valais.
