The siblings and parents of George Burchill 1826 Mangotsfield - miner
« on: Thursday 26 September 19 07:06 BST (UK) »
Hi
I wonder if anyone can help. George Burchill was my 3 great grandfather. Facts I have researched show he was born circa 1826 in Mangotsfield and his father was called Charles and he was a miner. He married Fanny Sheppard (29 Jun 1845. Died 1847) and then later Harriet Holbrook 13 Nov 1848. My great great grandmother was their daughter Ann born 1853. I believe he died in a Wakefield Colliery accident as have the death certificate 21 Feb 1867. He had travelled up there from Bristol for work the week before he died, according to the coroner's report. Fits in with timeline ( Harriet is a widow by the 1871 census). Also a witness to the accident was his nephew Joseph 'Charles' Garland, his wife's sister Ann's son. On other family trees on Ancestry he appears as having 6 siblings some of which ended up in Frackville, Schuylkill County. I went along with this until I looked more closely at the USA censuses. I found a George living next door to Morris Burchill and family and also to Ann Roberts married to Charles Burchill (all from England). However this George Burchill was married to Sarah and with children William and John. The age is the same as my George Burchill. As the 1860, 1870 and 1880 censuses all show George as a neighbour, it means something is wrong! Any clues as to who my George Burchill's family could be and who the other George is (also a miner), would be gratefully appreciated before I delete 6 siblings and all of their family branches from my tree!!
Thank you

There s a George Burchell baptized in Mangotsfield St. James 3 September 1826
parents Charles and Elizabeth. Father collier.

In 1841 there is also a George Burchell age rounded to 15 son of Dennis and Hannah

ADDED at the same church
George Burchell baptized 22 October 1826 son of Charles and Ann, address Staple Hill Mangotsfield, father collier.

This is going to be a puzzle, with 2 families with father named Charles.

Thanks for your help. I also found the two families with Charles as the father and both colliers. I have the Mangotsfield ones on my tree but am so confused by the USA census for some of these siblings who went out to work and live in Pennsylvania - Maurice, Charlotte, Charles and Maria Burchill and their families as found a George Burchill living near them from England but says George was married to Sarah in 1870. I feel I have it all incorrect on my tree. My relative was married to Harriet Holbrook, father Charles and died in 1867. I think he died or maybe he ran off with Sarah and went to live in the USA! I will have to check the George and Sarah’s children’s dates of birth, their marriage date and maybe a record of immigration to be more accurate.

If he is the brother of Maurice, Charlotte etc then it means my George has another family. The other 1841 census with Charles the coal miner, George, Emma and William from Staple Hill are confusing me. Who are they?

1860 census
George Birchell 32 born England
Phoebe 30 England
Charles 12 born England
Elizabeth 10, Ann 8, William 6, John 4, Phoebe 2, George 6months all born PA.

I could not see them in England 1850 so they must have emigrated after 1847 but before late 1850
as daughter Elizabeth born PA.

George Burchill married Phoebe Bird 1846 registered at Dudley Staffs.
Charles Birchill registered West Bromwich 1847 September quarter mothers maiden name Bird.

Phoebe dies after son George was born and before 1867/8.
George  marries Sarah Haines a widow nee Coleman (from death certificate of Thomas Haines parents George Haines and Sarah Coleman)
1870 census there is an Andrew Birchill age 2 he would appear to be from the marriage to Sarah.

The marriage of George to Phoebe 1846 will give you his fathers name. Hopefully it's not a registry office marriage.
There are Birchill's in Staffordshire as well.

You could check newspapers to see when they were recruiting miners to go to PA.

Maurice went out as a single man as he married Grace Elizabeth Vaughan 4 August 1856 in PA.
