Sampson HOOPER
« on: Sunday 29 September 19 08:19 BST (UK) »
I have found him from the 1871 census onwards, but can find no sign of him before this.
Stated on the census 1871-1910 that he was born southsea, HAM.
His mar cert (ancestry)  says his father was Joseph but cannot confirm this.

He was a mariner, seaman, sailman, coastguard.

He married Annette Margaret EBEL many spelling variations and first name variations.

Please can anyone find him before 1871.

Thank you
Michelle

On Census he is a Naval Pensioner.

London Illustrated News 9 Jun 1888 -
....received, through the Foreign Office, a silver medal and diploma, which have been awarded by the French Government to Sampson Hooper, seaman of the British steam-ship Brighton, in recognition of his bravery in rescuing a child from drowning in the harbour ...

Look at Britishnewspaperarchives......you need a subscription to see the full article....and other mentions of his name.

Hi,

Looking at the preview image of his records here,

https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D7933648

it looks like he was serving as an Ord (Ordinary seaman) on the ??iers from 21 July 1860 to 12 Dec 1862, with a promotion to AB (Able Seaman) in June 1861.

I think this is him in 1861,

1861 RG9/4441  f.304  p.24
Vessel:  Algiers
Sampson HOOPER

No info about him at all unfortunately.

Regards,
Daisy

Thank you people, he is quite elusive.
I have tried using the name COOPER with no joy,
any other thoughts on what HOOPER could be transcribed as?
