The area of Marylebone
« on: Monday 14 October 19 14:42 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know any reason why people may have come to Marylebone specifically from country areas? I have quite a few ancestors who married there between 1740 and 1850 even though they lived in villages like Pinner, Harefield and even Fletching, Sussex. Could there have been some kind of incentive to marry there?

Hi
Sounds like the trendy thing to do to get married in London especially as some of the areas you mention are on the line into Marylebone.

There has been at least one previous thread on Rootschat about the subject
( not specifcally this line though )

"1740" probably too early?

If you're talking trains then yes, too early. Although coach transport was available i'm still wondering why Marylebone in particular? The people involved were not wealthy so it would also have added to the cost of the marriage unless, maybe, there was an incentive or dispensation?

Maybe they had business interests in the area?

I have found similar with at least two branches of my family, each one with members going off to get married in particular London churches. I was able to work out that several cousins had moved there 50-100 years earlier, and perhaps there were others from the same area forming a little colony. They may have gone to marry there, since they were familiar with the area from visiting or working for their relations, and wanted a day (or few days) out in the big city, or sometimes to escape disapproval of family or a local vicar towards a marriage (because they were cousin marriages in several cases).

The Regents canal was around then as it will be 200 years old next year linked with other canals it would have been possible for people to get there they could have also had connections to the canals
