GREAT CULVERDEN STABLES TUNBRIDGE WELLS
« on: Friday 19 August 05 06:18 BST (UK) »
Any information on the stables or who owned them would be appreciated. I have a Henry Bowles working as coachman on 1871 and 1881 census and all his family living there too. Any information appreciated.

Hi Julie

The entry next to your Henry BOWLES in 1871 is:

Great Culverden

James M O BYNG honourable land owner & JP with his family & lots of servants so I would  guess that the stables were perhaps part of that property and that your ancestor probably worked for him.

There is also Great Culverden Lodge where the gardener, William SWAN, lived with his family.

Hi Julie

1881 is the same - BYNG family in residence at Gt Culverden, the lodge occupied by gardener William SWAN and your family occupying the stables.
