Saltley reformatory for boys 1891
« on: Tuesday 15 October 19 18:28 BST (UK) »
Hi all
I was wondering if anyone knew anything about the above place please. I have found an Edwin Wolverson aged 18 in the reformatory in 1891, does anyone know if there are admission records available at all. I have posted on an older thread but the last reply was 2 years ago so I thought I would start a knew one. Edwin was born in Willenhall Staffordshire in 1872, I would love to know what his crime was, thank you in advance.

Sadly, there were originally pictures with the admissions registers, but at some point in the past they were mostly removed. there are two or three remaining, but not one of Edwin.

I've had a qlook through the log book (a quarterly summary report of the state of the reformatory). which among other things reports on boys who have been released on licence. That is, they are allowed to leave the institution in order to work. The logbooks report as follows:

14 April 1891 on licence in Wolverhampton, conduct reported as good.
July 1891 on licence to Mr Wooding, Wolverhampton, conduct good.
13 Oct 1891 on licence to Mr Wooding, Wolverhampton, conduct good.
8 Dec 1891 on licence in Wolverhampton, conduct reported as good.
28 Apr 1892 on licence in Wolverhampton, conduct reported as good.
9 Aug 1892 on licence in Willenhall, conduct reported as good.
13 Dec 1892 on licence in Willenhall, conduct reported as good.
14 Feb 1893 on licence in Willenhall, conduct reported as good.
18 Apr 1893 on licence in Willenhall, conduct reported as good.
13 Jun 1893 on licence in Willenhall, conduct reported as good.

21 Jun 1893 discharged (expiry of term) whilst on licence

I couldn't find a newspaper report of his trial

Glad to help

Saltley Reformatory School Lookup Request
« Reply #6 on: Wednesday 26 February 20 15:25 GMT (UK) »
Hi.  Just been informed of this lookup and wonder if it's possible for someone to lookup the name of David Thompson, born Pontefract, who was put in prison, at the age of 11 for 10 days, followed by time in a reformatory until the age of 16 years.  He was incarcerated in HMP Wakefield on 22 Dec 1884 but I'm not sure which reformatory he was sent to. It's quite possible it was Saltley Reformatory.  He and 3 friends broke into two shops on two different dates and stole unspecified items from one shop and bottles of wine and a bottle of gin from a local councillor and unfortunately gave themselves away by being drunk at school.  Fingers crossed.

Welcome to Rootschat

Have you seen this link which gives details of available records.  If he originated from Yorkshire - why do you think he may have been sent to a reformatory in Warwickshire.

http://www.childrenshomes.org.uk/SaltleyRfy/

What year was he born?  The only 1881 entry is a David S Thompson b 1872 Pontefract - parents William E & Caroline

I was pointed in the direction of this site because a previous lookup had been completed with children in the Pontefract area being sent to this reformatory.  I thought it was strange but they were there.  There was someone called Dusty2 who seems to have access to the Admissions Register. I might try and contact them direct.

As the date of the court case was 1884 and he was aged 11 (according to the prison record) or 12 (according to the newspaper account) his birth must have been 1872/3.

Thanks
