Dating of a photo in Preston, Lancs assumied to be Alice Smith
« on: Monday 21 October 19 10:51 BST (UK) »
Hello Everyone,

I wonder if some kind Rootschatter could possibly provide an approximate date for the photograph below please.

I have always 'assumed' it to be my Grandmother, Alice Smith - born in Preston, Lancs in 1885. I found it in my mother's precious tin box where important documents etc were kept.

From the age of the person on the photo - if it WAS my grandma - it would be c. 1905. (She married in that year).
I have looked for the photographer on census records without success. Many thanks for reading.

Edwardian so could well be 1905. She would be 20 which she could well be from the photo.

Shaun -- wow! Thank you so much for the information about the photographer - very useful.

AJ -- my most grateful thanks for the Edwardian detail. I am impressed that you are able to identify the period. From the clothes, I had wondered if it was before then. The only other photo I have of my grandma is when she was in her 50's or 60's and a typical plump 'cuddly grandma' like figure - so I had never really been sure.

I am most grateful to both of you. Thank you very much indeed.

Her hat is impressive  -  must be a yard of material. It would have needed strong hat pins to prevent it taking flight in a high wind.
She had full lips. I can't see a ring on her left hand.

You are right Maiden Stone - she has no ring. She was married in July 1905  on the day after her 20th birthday (it was actually on my grandad's 20th birthday! Maybe it was taken the year before as you would have thought she would at least have an engagement ring. Interestingly her eldest child's birth was registered Q/E Mar 1906 -- so she was either just pregnant when she married or he was a honeymoon baby!

I am a bit concerned - but I have been rooting through an enormous pile of photos - and have found the attached.

One is of her first born son and the other is of my grandma in her 50's or 60's -- she looks nothing like the early 1900s photo BUT - I do think my uncle looks like her. I would really appreciate your views.
